Apparently on a talent show on ZDF this spring, they had a musicals theme and Uwe Kröger as a judge. This makes for entertaining clips of him making faces as people torture German and English musicals.

But this is something else. They had Villazon as a guest star, because apart from being Caruso Jr, he's also done Man of La Mancha. Which he did admirably - guy's got a siege weapon of a voice on him.

And then he and the host went and did Always look on the bright side of life. Yes, from Spamalot. Monty Python. My brain!

(Video under cut, because I refuse to be the only one traumatised.)

He's a shiny person :D One of my two favourite contemporary tenors, together with Beczala.

Oh my god. Is Thomas Gottschalk *still* presenting stuff? I remember him presenting Wetten Das when I was little. I'm pretty sure I still caught him doing that not too long ago, but I have a hard time imagining him hosting anything else.

I actually zapped into that and had to watch because I was too mortified to switch away.

You brought back the trauma!

Mother sent that link to me without warning ~_~ I mean, you warn people! This is worse than the one where Szilveszter Szabo's playing Rudolf to Sandor Nagy's Death!

And now that I've actually seen the entire video... I think I'm actually too used to the Eric Idle version (from Life of Brian) to ever be happy with another version of that. But it *is* very surreal, yeah.

It's partly the sheer idea of Villazon doing that. And I must say that with all that he's usually standing apart on stage, or surrounded by not-too-tall sopranos, I had no idea he was pocket-sized.

I think they had a general policy of not doing closeups on him because the actual contestants were almost uniformly dreadful ;) I can't use Youtube at work, but you might want to search for the clip from that show that has "This is the moment" - the guy singing is using head-voice throughout, and there's the tiniest cut to Uwe, who is all "Dear god, why me????" in a restrained German way.

He was a judge, though, wasn't he? I mean.. at some point, he had to actually talk about the contestants, right? *G* That would be amusing to see.

It does have a trainwreck appeal ;) I should see what he had to say about the couple who did Totale Finsternis - I turned that clip off after 5 seconds because of my ears hurting.
