About LJ alternatives
GreatestJournal has just cut userpics down to 10.

InsaneJournal has been down for the past hour.

I think I'll be staying with our Russian overlords for the time being.

The only migration I plan is on Wordpress, and even that is still in the undefined future. I will let my paid LJ account expire, though, as a sign of protest for the various debacles. I think I might get to live even with just 6 userpics... though it will be difficult.

Though, strangely, IJ seems to be loading for me at the moment...?

Also for me. Maybe the flood of new users overwhelmed the server temporarily? :)

I notice that IJ has gained ~80 perm accounts and a comparable number of paid ones in the last week -- and just compare the stats.bml page before the current unpleasantness with today's. We LJers seem to like giving back the love.

After a quick consult, I think I'll be sticking with GJ for RP purposes, though I'm backing up like crazy. It's very much a pity there's no program that lets you upload backups with comments included - my main problem is that we have tons of 1000+ comment threads that constitute the bulk of the conversation. Not to mention that IJ's not looking particularly stable at the moment.

I have to admit that I managed to let an automatic-payments payment slip through in November, so I'm here for the next while, at least. Also, I frankly have more trust in SUP than 6A so far; at least it looks like they actually care about LJ as a service. With 6A, I was very much under the impression that the only reason for the acquisition was to poach the engineering talent.

Nothing says evil overlords can't be semi-consistent!

And I'm sticking with LJ (at least for now) because I'm too lazy to move, and I don't want to yet, having joined so recently compared to others. Oh, to have a better sense of timing! (fake woe :) )

I have to admit I find the automatic "OMGevilRussians" reaction a little too knee-jerk. Might be because of all my Russian blood and being next door to the real thing ;)

I keep thinking the same thing, although for different reasons.

Plus the post CW issues that some of the panic may be linked to.

You may have picked up from my novel that my school was teaching Russian as an option and sneaking bits of Russian culture into other subjects long before most UK schools even considered doing the same.

I kind of got the impression :) On this end, well, helps to have family there.

My friend Anna's sister won a Russian Language competition and spent a long time out there, some of it with the rest of her family visiting, and I got to hear all about it when they came back.

I'm sure Russian companies come with various issues, but it's not like any other country's commerce is perfect either.

lol I did think of that. I was born just a few years before the end of the Cold War, so fortunately I never had to go through the whole "hide under your desk in case of a nuclear bomb" thing. Also one of my aunts went to Russia several times in the early to mid 90's.

Oh this is interesting about GreatestJournal. Ahah, too many new users to support or is it another reason? XD

They actually came out and said "we don't want new users, go to IJ". I have to admit I'm quite put out, since my RPG's been there for over a year now.

Having never been under evil overlord rule before oh, wait I forgot the current regimen I'm willing to give them a try for now. At least we know the Russians are really lax about copyrights just going by all the Russian MP3 sites. XD;

Frankly, I'd expect them to be more lax about the morality, too. No knee-jerk bible-belt reflexes.

Hmmm, I haven't even researched any alternatives to lj, but so far SUP hasn't done anything nasty to me. But there is lots of paranoia going around about it in Russian lj sector, so I am slightly worried.

On the other hand, they've been in charge of the Russian LJ for a year. One would think bad things would start already?

Wee-eell... I heard some people grumping about privacy issues and about lj statistics (now you can see everybody who read your journal, day, time, and so on). I personally have been with SUP for a year and haven't seen anything bad, so I cannot judge.

Actually I wouldn't mind that that much. And they seem to actually care about the service and developing it, which is a good thing.

Yes, they certainly do. As far as I understand, some people just want SUP to stay out of their journals, period.
